Introduction to Home Schooling
Home schooling has gained in popularity over the years. Many parents feel the education system is not doing its job to educate their children. Some parents have decided to school their children themselves. This form of schooling takes place in the home and is structured in a similar manner to the regular school experience.
Parents work with the school to provide an education that is equal to the one they would receive in a regular school setting. The children must have learning sessions in topics such as math, reading, science, and history. There must also be some form of physical activity during the day, comparable to gym.
Of course, like most things, home schooling has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages include a more focused learning environment. Without the distraction of other students, children will be able to concentrate on what is being taught. It is also a more relaxed atmosphere. Children are comfortable in their own homes, aren't embarrassed to be wrong, and won't feel the social pressure to conform to others' opinions.
There are also drawbacks to home schooling. Social skills are not developed as quickly. The children are often sheltered from life situations such as not being included in a group or being the best in the class. These children can sometimes feel uncomfortable in social situations because they are not used to them.
Home schooling is a decision that should be made based on the child's attitude and social adjustment. While it can be a wonderful experience stimulated with learning and free thought, it can teach children not to rely on community, which is something we all rely on at some point during our lives. Ignoring this could make settling into college or a career a lot more difficult than it has to be.
Finding A Reliable Home Schooling Resource
Before Home Schooling a child, determine if the child will be better off in a home setting. Many parents homeschool their children only to discover that they needed their classmates?attention. For this reason, reading about schooling one's children at home is a smart idea. Not only are the children affected, but so are parents who have taken on the responsibility of teaching their children everything, or at least enough so that they will continue to learn on their own.
There are many books that make an excellent Home Schooling resource when teaching your child. Talking with other parents who teach their children at home is another good Home Schooling resource. Reviewing their lesson plans and curriculum is a great way to gain knowledge and to see what it takes to educate a child. It takes a lot of patience to teach. Children learn at different paces. Some need more attention than others. Being patient will help the children understand; and they won't feel intimidated if they don't know the answer right away.
Another Home Schooling resource is the Internet. The internet is a wonderful educational tool. It can help a person research just about anything. It is good to expose children to the Internet, but also let them know that books and other Home Schooling resources are available. When writing a report, for instance, your child should know how to find and cite information in books and encyclopedias as well as the Internet.
Another thing to consider is whether or not Home Schooling is for you and your child. Home Schooling is not for everyone, no matter what Home Schooling resource you have to aid the learning process. Take the time to find out if it is something that can fit into the daily routine. Having more than one child to teach can become too much for one person. Finding a tutor works for some people who want their children to learn at home, but cannot teach them themselves. Tutors are trained teachers who can assist more than one child and make the idea of learning much more exciting and worthwhile experience for parents and for children.
